Maynard Ferguson & His Birdland Dream Band
This was one of the most exciting bands Maynard Ferguson ever led. A Dream Band assembled for the successful year they spent at Birdland in 1956, it had charts, specially commissioned by Ferguson, by some of the finest writers in contemporary jazz, including Bill Holman, Jimmy Giuffre, Marty Paich, Manny Albam, Ernie Wilkins and Johnny Mandel. With the rhythm section swinging all the way, the bands performance is inspired, marked by crisply powerful section work and exuberant solos from Ferguson, Cohn, Cleveland and Geller. This was a superior big band, ebullient, fiery and precise, its awesome power matched by writing that clearly stimulated the players. Exhilarating!

Maynard Ferguson and Chris Connor. Double Exposure & Two's
STEREO 24 BIT DIGITALLY REMASTERED 2 LPs on 1 CD Thanks to an arrangement between their respective labels, Atlantic and Roulette, Chris Connor was reunited with Maynard Ferguson in a NYC recording studio for a series of dates with his orchestra in late 1960 and early 1961. These sessions produced two excellent albums, one for each record company: Double Exposure on Atlantic, and Two s Company on Roulette. Throughout both Miss Connor is in good voice, singing in her sig- nature almost vibratoless style, as warm on ballads as she is superbly relaxed at up tempos. The arrangements, all by Don Sebesky except for two by Willie Maiden, place the main focus on the singer, but behind her the band, driven by drummer Rufus Jones, is in fine fettle, exuberant and swinging, crisp, tight and together. Ferguson s ebullient, stratospheric playing is liberally fea- tured, along with the full low register forays that were part of his phenome- nal range, making an effective contrast to Miss Connor s understated, almost ironic approach.

Body & Soul
Ferguson’s 1986 re-invention After the release of 1983’s Storm, and the following year’s Live From San Francisco, Maynard Ferguson was on a creative roll. When Body & Soul appeared in 1986, Ferguson himself said “It’s my best album in many years! Bear in mind, this is music we’ve worked on for some time, re-designing it and changing it-the tunes are not something we just hatched for a studio session.” And, re-design, he did, removing some brass from the band’s lineup, and replacing them with guitar and percussion. Combining newly written material with the chestnut title track from 1930, Body & Soul’s original 6 tracks were a revelation for fans, old and new, with the MF band reaching heights higher than Ferguson’s trademark ionospheric double high “Cs.” Omnivore Recordings, in conjunction with the Maynard Ferguson Trust, is happy to reintroduce this classic to the masses. To make this reissue even more special, three previously unissued tracks from the original sessions have been added. With new liner notes from MF band alumnus Denis DiBlasio and multiple Grammy® nominee Steve Wiest, Body & Soul’s audio story is augmented by tales from the people who were there during its creation. 30 years later, the release has lost none of its power and influence.
