Lackawanna County Chronicles (American

The green hills and bustling boroughs of Lackawanna County have fostered a remarkable history of pioneering citizens and momentous events. Dr. Mary C. Nivison became the first female physician in the city when she opened her Scranton practice in 1871. Audiences were amazed in 1915, when Harry Houdini escaped from a large cask of beer at the Poli Theatre. The Pennsylvania county had its share of mayhem and tragedy as well. In 1923, the Laurel Line bandits held up the train between Moosic and Avoca, and nineteen years later, the flood of 1942 sent waters rushing down Carbondale's Main Street. From the stories of the Great Riot of 1877 to memories of the Club Burger at Carrol's Restaurant, local author Margo L. Azzarelli chronicles the history of Lackawanna County with this fascinating series of vignettes.

The true pioneers of the upper Lackawanna River Valley were brothers from Philadelphia, William and Maurice Wurts, who believed the anthracite (hard) coal they found in the region could produce cheap energy as well as the popular bituminous (soft) coal of the day. They staged a demonstration in New York City and found enough subscribers in their enterprise to send their “Black Gold” out of the Moosic Mountains to New York to form America’s first private million-dollar corporation.By 1828 the Wurts’ Delaware and Hudso...

In 1800 the Slocum brothers took the mill over and began a charcoal furnace for iron manufacturing. A post office opened in 1811 and the delivery address was Slocum Hollow. It was still an area of de-centralized small businesses and modest communities in 1842 when William Henry, a native of Nazareth who had been operating a blast furnace in New Jersey, arrived with his son-in-law, Seldon T. - The Freach and Keen Murders: The True Story of the Crime That Shocked and Changed a Community Forever
The Freach and Keen Murders: The True Story of the Crime That Shocked and Changed a Community

In November 1973, William J. Wright, a former patient and trustee of the Farview State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, brutally murdered two teenage boys, Edmund Keen and Paul Freach, in Lackawanna County, a region that took great pride in not only its history, but its reputation as a friendly, family-oriented, safe place to live. It was a place where families could leave their doors unlocked, and be confident about allowing their children to play and explore outdoors. Yet all that would change in an instant. The brutal murders of these two boys forever altered the way people thought of this region and the safe neighborhoods they had come to take for granted. Kathleen P. Munley and Paul R. Mazzoni tell a story of unbelief, anger, and fear, but also courage and fortitude. They delve deep into the Commonwealth v. William J. Wright trial, looking inside the investigation, the trial, and how the public was impacted by this unthinkable crime. In captivating detail, the authors weave together the events of this devastating crime and remind us that, even in the pleasant light of day, evil can and does exist, and one must always be on guard.

 - Little Girl Lost: The True Story of The Vandling Murder
Little Girl Lost: The True Story of The Vandling

When 9-year-old Mae Barrett disappeared one dark and stormy night in January 1945, no one could imagine where the blue-eyed blonde haired girl had gone. But when Mae's beaten and mutilated corpse was found the next day in an abandoned house, her throat slashed and her face battered beyond recognition, the small town of Vandling was thrust into one of the most intensive police investigations in the history of Pennsylvania. The murder sent shock waves through the small town and surrounding area, holding residents hostage in the grips of a paralyzing fear. Who could have committed such a brutal crime against a child who was walking home from church? What kind of animal would discard a little girl like nothing more than trash? As police doggedly investigated the horrific murder, long before the use of DNA, computers, or modern forensic science, one key piece of evidence would lead them to 13-year-old Myron Semunchick. Brilliant, good looking, and extremely popular, Myron projected the image of the all American boy. He was also a cunning killer who murdered sadistically and almost got away with it. Little Girl Lost is the true story of one of the most notorious crimes in history. A case that made headlines across the United States and into Canada, it is also the story of the youngest ...

Old Forge and Moosic (Images of

Moosic was incorporated as a borough in 1898 and was followed by Old Forge shortly thereafter in 1899; these communities became a part of the area of Lackawanna County known as the Triboro. Throughout the years, industry and agriculture were the backbone of the local economy, and businesses like the Moosic Powder Company and Dutchess Underwear Company provided many residents with employment. In 1886, Arthur Frothingham purchased land in Moosic and opened Rocky Glen Park, the second oldest amusement park in Pennsylvania. Visitors enjoyed riding on the popular Million Dollar Roller Coaster until it closed its gates in 1987. Julia’s Restaurant/Hotel is one of the oldest landmark establishments in Old Forge, and it is still in operation today, serving great food nightly. By the 1960s, Old Forge earned the title of “Pizza Capital of the World.” Its trademark “Old Forge”–style pizza is served in many restaurants throughout Pennsylvania.
