Hieronymus Bosch. The Complete

A bird-monster devouring sinners, naked bodies in tantric contortions, a pair of ears brandishing a sharpened blade: with nightmarish details and fantastical painterly schemes, Netherlandish visionary Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516) secured his place as an art historical magnet. Five hundred years on from his death, his extraordinary works continue to enthrall scholars, artists, designers, and musicians. This large-scale TASCHEN monograph presents the complete Bosch oeuvre, celebrating the artist’s staggering compositional scope and most bizarre and intricate details through full-page reproductions, abundant details, and a fold-out spread drawn from The Last Judgement. With guidance from art historian and Bosch expert Stefan Fischer, we explore the many compelling elements that populate each scene, from hybrid creatures of man and beast, to painterly assaults on the body, and a pictorial use of proverbs and idioms. Particular attention is given to Bosch’s most famous work, the mesmerizing, terrifying triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights.

 - Devil On Night Chair by Hieronymus Bosch from Garden of Earthly Delights
Devil On Night Chair by Hieronymus Bosch from Garden of Earthly

In the early late 1400's, a painter from the Netherlands, Hieronymos Bosch, created paintings for churches which illustrated heaven and hell. He reached into the depth of his imagination and created fantastical images to teach Christians about good and bad behavior. This statue recreates one of his painted characters. We see the Devil eating a person on a chair where he will excrete the human remains. Hieronymus Bosch's style arises from the tradition of the book illuminations (manuscript illustrations from the Middle Ages). The caricatured representation of evil tones down its terrifying implications, but also serves as a defiant warning with a theological basis. ABOUT HIERONYMUS BOSCHIt is presumed that somehow Bosch had knowledge of the Visio Tnugdali (Latin: Vision of Tnugdalus, sometimes spelled Visio Tungdali), a twelfth century handwriting that describes a vision of a journey through hell. This was possibly the basis for this devil, crowned with a cauldron, symbolizing the diabolical inferno fire. He is sat on a night chair, which offers him the possibility of excreting the gorged souls. His curious footwear in the shape of pitchers symbolizes dipsomania. - Helmeted Bird Monster by Hieronymus Bosch from Garden of Earthly Delights
Helmeted Bird Monster by Hieronymus Bosch from Garden of Earthly

Helmeted Bird by Hieronymus Bosch is part of the highly collectible figurine set by Parastone of The Netherlands. This intricately painted statue will amuse your friends for many years. Statue measures 3.25in x 4.75in x 2.5in, made from resin. This helmeted bird monster is carrying a pencil box and an ink pot in its beak, in which the nun, decaying into a pig, is dipping her pen. A severed foot is swinging from the bird's helmet referring to the horrible corporal punishments which could be expected in hell. The pig, indeed an indictment against the decay of clergy life, is tempting the man who is sitting beside him and it appears that he is drawing up a contract. Is the man possibly selling his soul? ABOUT THE ARTWORK: THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS Hieronymus Bosch shows us how we mortal souls, arisen from earthly paradise, are on our way to the atrocious ordeals of hell via our unchaste lives on earth. The dark painting on the closed panels shows the Creation, surrounded by water, in accordance with medieval traditions. These fantastic and biblical sculptures from Renaissance master Hieronymus Bosch are amazing statue adaptations from historic paintings. They have a hellish and demonic surrealism to them that feels apocalyptic. We here at Museumize pride ourselves on offeri...

Hieronymus Bosch. Complete

In the midst of the realist-leaning artistic climate of the Late Gothic and Early Renaissance, Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516) was more than an anomaly. Bosch’s paintings are populated with grotesque scenes of fantastical creatures succumbing to all manner of human desire, fantasy, and angst. One of his greatest inventions was to take the figural and scenic representations known as drolleries, which use the monstrous and the grotesque to illustrate sin and evil, and to transfer them from the marginalia of illuminated manuscripts into large-format panel paintings. Alongside traditional hybrids of man and beast, such as centaurs, and mythological creatures such as unicorns, devils, dragons, and griffins, we also encounter countless mixed creatures freely invented by the artist. Many subsidiary scenes illustrate proverbs and figures of speech in common use in Bosch’s day. In his Temptation of St Anthony triptych, for example, the artist shows a messenger devil wearing ice skates, evoking the popular expression that the world was “skating on ice”―meaning it had gone astray. In his pictorial translation of proverbs, in particular, Bosch was very much an innovator.Bosch―whose real name was Jheronimus van Aken―was widely copied and imitated: the num...

Parastone Ears with Knife Larger by Hieronymus Bosch from Garden of Earthly Delights Collectible

THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS Two enormous ears, held together by an arrow and a knife jammed in between. Is there an allegorical medieval symbolism behind this, or are the horrible tortures one might expect in hell pictured here once more? Is the monogram on the knife an M of the B of Bosch?

Hieronymus Bosch: Garden of Earthly

Now available in a new edition, this book explores Hieronymus Bosch’s masterpiece Garden of Earthly Delights. Few paintings inspire the kind of intense study and speculation as Garden of Earthly Delights, the world-famous triptych by Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch. The painting has been interpreted as a heretical masterpiece, an opulent illustration of the Creation, and a premonition of the end of the world. In this book, renowned art historian Hans Belting offers a radical reinterpretation of the work, which he sees not as apocalyptic but utopian, portraying how the world would exist had the Fall not happened. Taking readers through each panel, Belting discusses various schools of thought and explores Bosch’s life and times. This fascinating study is an important contribution to the literature and theory surrounding one of the world’s most enigmatic artists.

 - Parastone Tree Man by Hieronymus Bosch Museum Replica Garden of Earthly Delights
Parastone Tree Man by Hieronymus Bosch Museum Replica Garden of Earthly

From an artistic point of view, the world famous brilliant forerunner of surrealism was, in his day, unique and radically different. Hieronymus (Jeroen for short) Bosch was born (ca. 1450-1516) during the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance in 's-Hertogenbosch, in the Duchy of Brabant. Bosch places visionary images in a hostile world full of mysticism, with the conviction that the human being, due to its own stupidity and sinfulness has become prey to the devil himself. He holds a mirror to the world with his cerebral irony and magical symbolism, sparing no one. He aims his mocking arrows equally well at the hypocrisy of the clergy as the extravagance of the nobility and the immorality of the people. Hieronymus Bosch's style arises from the tradition of the book illuminations (manuscript illustrations from the Middle Ages). The caricatured representation of evil tones down its terrifying implications, but also serves as a defiant warning with a theological basis. Many recognize a self-portrait in one of Bosch's most famous hybrid creatures. The hollow space in the egg-shaped body offers space for a pub. All breaks adrift through the two boats in which the tree-shaped paws are situated. Music and dance may have lead to licentiousness, symbolised by the bagpipes on the headwear. Here is an imaginative tale about the unconventional fifteenth-century Flemish painter Hieronymus Bosch, as told by his wildly dissatisfied housekeeper. Caldecott Medalists Leo and Diane Dillon and their son, Lee, depict a most unusual household filled with pickle-winged fish, flying furniture, and other bizarre delights. “From its sumptuous paintings to its gilt frames to its quixotic verse, everything about this exquisitely produced tour de force bespeaks wit and elegance.”--Publishers Weekly

An accessible survey on a genius artist, published to accompany the 500th anniversary of Bosch's death Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516) lived and worked in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, where he created enigmatic paintings and drawings full of bizarre creatures, phantasmagoric monsters, and terrifying nightmares. He also depicted detailed landscapes and found inspiration in fundamental moral concepts: seduction, sin, and judgment. This beautiful book accompanies a major exhibition on Bosch's work in his native city, and will feature important new research on his 25 known paintings and 20 drawings. The book, divided into six sections, covers the entirety of the artist's career. It discusses in detail Bosch's Pilgrimage of Life, Bosch and the Life of Christ, his role as a draughtsman, his depictions of saints, and his visualization of Judgment Day and the hereafter, among other topics, and is handsomely illustrated by new photography undertaken by the Bosch Research and Conservation Project Team.
