Georgian Bay: Discovering A Unique North American
Georgian Bay and its remarkable '30,000 Islands' area (there is actually closer to 100,000 islands at the last count) is the most extensive freshwater archipelago anywhere in the world. It is an iconic waterscape and ecosystem unique in North America. Yet this iconic landscape and the story it tells of the history of our planet is little known to Canadians despite its proximity to the nation's largest urban area. This book brings together leading geologists, ecologists, artists and archeologists to tell the dramatic and so-far untold story of Georgian Bay from its earliest beginnings in the aftermath of a gigantic meteorite strike when the area was dominated by mountains as large as the Himalayas, to the first appearance of humans during the waning stages of the last ice age some 12,000 years ago when much of the area still lay buried under ice a kilometre thick. Georgian Bay contains the largest freshwater island in the world (Manitoulin); its rocks are as old as 2.5 billion years and the varied topography of its coast and hinterlands have inspired generations of artists, geologists and naturalists and those escaping from the urban cityscapes to seek solace among the white pines that grow out of the rock. Its waterscapes are as legendary as the summer storms that spring out o...

Fighting Sail on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay: The War of 1812 and Its
Canadian Barry Gough's new work makes an important and long-awaited contribution to our understanding of the struggle for domination in the Upper Great Lakes and the American heartland during the War of 1812. A critical time for both the old northwest and the peoples who lived along the U.S.-Canadian border, it was also a time when the territories that became Wisconsin and Minnesota were formed, the fur trade was established, and the Indian nations attempted to preserve both their homeland and their independence. It is a unique study in that it goes far beyond the Battle of Lake Erie, where traditional historical accounts end, adding new chapters to the history of Detroit and Michilimackinac. This comprehensive, chronological account exposes the reader not only to the naval and territorial consequences of the era but also to the plight along the way. It is the story of shipbuilding, of the limits of sea power, and of the men and women who succeeded in traversing unknown water and land. The author details such events as Commodore Arthur Sinclair's disastrous U.S. naval expedition to Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in 1814 and describes how British forces captured unsuspecting U.S. naval schooners. Supplemented with excellent maps and illustrations, the text also provides information a...

Rockscapes of Georgian Bay
Here in his own words, is why artist Ed Bartram paints with the geological exactitude and passion that have made his artwork famous. Ed Bartram, printmaker, photographer and painter, has a special vision of Georgian Bay that has captivated his imagination for over half a century. Since the early 1970s he has transformed this vision into a series of graphic images that reflect the land and particularly the rock face of this region of Canada's Precambrian Shield; works that are powerfully and often luxuriously physical, but have an abstract dimension with richly colored and textured surfaces. In finding his own interpretation of the "Thirty Thousand Island" landscape made iconic by the Group of Seven, he has had to display great ingenuity in finding a new theme in the old. His work reminds us, in a forceful way, of the unique power of the area, even before it was held up for serious consideration in a work of art. Bartram writes of his own work: "Rather than using the traditional landscape composition of the Group of Seven, I often take a more intimate viewpoint where the rock surface itself becomes the subject of the work of art. Within the structure of the rock, I find patterns which become abstract landscapes themselves and capture the essence of the windswept north."
