Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty
Some of the most spectacular and historically significant works of Eastern art are housed in the Royal Collection. In Chinese and Japanese Works of Art, John Ayers examines more than two thousand works distributed amongst the royal residences, encompassing works of art in a wide variety of media, from jade, porcelain, and lacquer to embroidery and painted scrolls. Among the works featured in the book’s vibrant full-color reproductions are evidence of the long-standing trade of luxury goods between Europe, Japan, and China over the last three-hundred years. A striking feature of the collection is the mounting in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries of many objects in gilt bronze. The mounts themselves, made in French and British workshops, are often of superb quality and great historical importance, and they are published here for the first time.A fascinating and beautifully illustrated survey, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art will be an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the arts of China and Japan.

Windsor Castle: A Thousand Years of a Royal
When we envision the British monarchy, one of the first things that comes to mind is Buckingham Palace, with its gilded gates and changing of the guard. But it is Windsor Castle that can claim pride of place as the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, dating to the earliest days of the monarchy, a symbol of strength and magnificence over a nearly thousand-year history of sieges and soirées alike. Witness to both great moments in the country’s history and those that threatened to destroy it, the castle has become a symbol of English culture and architecture. Throughout England’s history, Windsor Castle has stood fast and evolved, much like the monarchy that inhabits it to this day. The magisterial Windsor Castle: A Thousand Years of a Royal Palace illuminates the castle’s past using evidence from archaeological investigation and documentary sources, and is illustrated with paintings, drawings, and both historical and specially commissioned contemporary photographs, as well as stunning reconstructions of the castle’s past appearance which bring this essential piece of English history to life.

Introduction ... l'histoire du Buddhisme Indien (Cambridge Library Collection - Perspectives from the Royal Asiatic Society) (French
Eugène Burnouf (1801-52), an eminent French orientalist and scholar of Sanskrit, made groundbreaking contributions to the knowledge of Zoroastrianism and to the deciphering of the Zend and Pāli languages. He was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and of numerous Asiatic societies throughout Europe. When he first published this monumental work of scholarship in 1844, Burnouf established European Buddhist studies on solid foundations. In it, he presents the Indian historical context in which Buddhism developed, as well as its connections and debates with Brahmanism. He also sheds light on the role of the caste system in this religion. To this day, Burnouf's pioneering vision continues to shape our understanding of Buddhism. This second edition was published posthumously in 1876, with an introduction by the French philosopher and journalist Jules Barthélemy Saint-Hilaire (1805-95). It remains of relevance to students of religion, oriental studies and Indian history.
