***Now own America's first small-size cent! Scarce Flying Eagle cents were struck only at the Philadelphia Mint, and only coined for circulation for two short years, in 1857 and 1858 (patterns were struck in 1856). Authorized by the Small Cent Act of 1857, the Flying Eagle cent was popular from the start. When they were first released on May 25, 1857, more than a thousand people waited in a line that wound around the U.S. Mint building. They were so popular that the Mint had to set up booths in the yard to sell the coins to the public. This American classic is a welcome addition to any collection - order today! In average circulated condition, somewhat more worn than coin depicted in file photo, grading about GOOD. Bargain priced!

Some additional information about Flying Eagle coins: Firsts are always remembered and this one is no exception. The Flying Eagle cent was our first small size cent and was struck for three years, 1856-1858. The Philadelphia Mint released the new cents to the public in May of 1857. On the day of its release, hundreds of people lined up to exchange their old coins, for this new fascinating small sized cent. In fact, the public interest in these Flying Eagle Cents set off a coin collecting boom. Collectors paid up to Two Dollars for these coins, which at the time was unheard of. Unfortunately, this coins existence was limited and the Mint introduced the Indian Head penny in 1859.
