 - The Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle (Weapon)
The Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle

Throughout the Napoleonic Wars, there was a growing perception that a muzzle-loading rifle was more practical compared to the limitations of rifles then currently in use. This thinking ultimately resulted in the 1853 Enfield Pattern, a rifle which, for the first time, was issued to every soldier in the British Army instead of the few trained marksmen. Its use during the Crimean War and later the Indian Mutiny would vindicate this policy when it became clear that the infantry were now capable of outgunning artillery. In addition, this was the first British weapon manufactured using new American technology, which meant that the component parts were interchangeable, ensuring that the weapon was easy to maintain on the battlefield. There were three main types based on the P 53 - the long rifle, the short rifle and the carbine, and this volume provides a concise history of the development and use of each type. In addition, the book discusses the privately manufactured varieties which were used for sport as well as the standard accessories issued to the infantryman in the field including bayonets, combination tools, the cartridge, ammunition pouch, muzzle stopper and ramrods. The P 53 first became notorious during the Indian Mutiny when the use of pig fat to lubricate the bullets led d...

 - British Enfield Rifles, Vol. 4, the Pattern 1914 and U.S. Model 1917 Enfield Rifles
British Enfield Rifles, Vol. 4, the Pattern 1914 and U.S. Model 1917 Enfield

At the start of World War I Great Britain was woefully short of small arms of all types. The American firms of Remington Arms and Winchester were asked to supply 1.1 million rifle according to a new pattern established in 1914. When the United States entered the war in 1917, the U.S. government took over the contracts. The caliber was changed from the British .303 to the U.S. .30-06 and 3.7 million U.S. Model 1917 Enfield rifles were produced. The M1917 proved to be one of the most reliable and accurate bolt action rifles ever developed. Sgt. Alvin York was armed with a M1917 Enfield and a Colt Government .45 ACP pistol when he captured most of a battalion of German troops in France. Both the British P-14 and the U.S. Model 1917 Enfield served well into World War II with Allied Forces from Russia to China. This book provides a part-by-part description of both of these famed rifles. Collectors will find all the codes, markings, finishes and other information needed to determine originality and even service units. The book is well illustrated with line drawings of parts and photographs of complete rifles, telescopic sights and other important parts. This is volume four in a five volume series on the British Enfield Rifle.

British Enfield Rifles, Vol. 4, Pattern 1914 and U.S. Model of

Charles R. Stratton continues his very successful series on British military rifles with the little known but widely available Pattern 1914 and U.S. Model of 1917 Rifles. Often called the American Enfield, the Pattern 1914 in .303 caliber was the only British military rifle ever built wholly in the United States even though it was designed by the engineers at Enfield Arsenal, in England. The U.S. Model 1917 was the same rifle, but rechambered for the American .30-06 cartridge. Over 1.2 million Pattern 1914 rifles and 2.5 million Model 1917 rifles were built during World War I by three American companies, Winchester, Remington and Eddystone. More American soldiers, including Sergeant Alvin York, were armed with the Model 1917 Enfield than with the Model 1903 Springfield. The demand for this book has been so great that the author and publisher decided to skip over Volume 3 The Long Lee Rifle and Its Conversions for the time being. Volume 4, The Pattern 1914 and U.S. Model of 1917 Rifles is being published out of sequence to meet this demand. The Model 1917 Enfield has long been a favorite American collectible. Over the years, it has been sporterized for hunting and restored for collecting by thousands of shooters. Parts are commonly available and many P-14 parts are interchangeable...

Description Author: Peter Smithurst Illustrator: Peter Dennis About this book The Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle was the first rifled firearm issued to every soldier in the British Army and gave the infantry a revolutionary increase in firepower.
