Founded by Reuben H. Fleet in 1923, Consolidated Aircraft Corporation (later Convair) became one of the most significant aircraft manufacturers in American history. For roughly 60 years, this prolific company was synonymous with San Diego. In fact, whole sections of the city were designed to provide homes for the Convair workers and their families. These men and women were responsible for building some of the most significant aircraft in aviation history, including the PBY Catalina, B-24 Liberator, F-102 Delta Dagger, as well as the reliable Atlas missile, which was vital in launching America into space. To this day, more than a decade after the company passed from the San Diego scene, tens of thousands of San Diegans still celebrate a seminal connection with Reuben Fleet, his company, and his popular slogan, "Nothing short of right is right."

Consolidated B-24 Liberator: 1939 onwards (all Marks) (Owners' Workshop
The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was the Second World War's most numerous Allied heavy bomber and - at over 18,000 made - the most produced American military aircraft. It was operated by several Allied air forces (including the USAAF and the RAF) and navies, attaining a distinguished war record on operations in the Western European, Pacific, Mediterranean and China-Burma-India theatres. Graeme Douglas has been granted privileged access to several airworthy examples of the B-24 in the USA to give an unrivalled insight into the construction, operation and maintenance of this classic heavy bomber.

B-24 Liberator Pilot's Flight Operating
The Consolidated B-24 Liberator first saw combat in June of 1942, making a daring raid into Nazi-occupied Romania to bomb the oil fields at Ploesti. Nearly 18,500 Liberators were built during World War II, making it by far the most-produced American combat aircraft. It served in many roles beyond heavy bomber, transport, and anti-submarine patrol, and flew in Africa, Europe, India, the Atlantic, India and the Pacific Theatre. Originally printed by the United States Army Air Force in 1942, the B-24 Liberator pilot's flight manual taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Originally "Restricted", the manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted, and color images appear as black and white. Lend-Lease and Soviet Aviation in the Second World
Seventy years have passed since the Second World War yet the books and articles still keep coming in a never-ending stream discussing the question of what role the deliveries of arms and materials by Soviet allies played in the victory of the Red Army. In Russia, the American Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter along with the Studebaker US6 truck and canned stewed meat became the symbols of Allied help to the USSR during the Second World War. Other aircraft which arrived to the country under the Lend-Lease program are less known but also made a valuable contribution to the victory. The author of this book for the first time has assembled a huge volume of information related to the delivery of aviation equipment from UK and USA. Based on documents from Russian and foreign archives, museums, and veterans' recollections, the author has made a qualitative and quantitative appraisal of the influence of these deliveries upon the Soviet war effort and airpower during the conflict. The book details the routes of the aircraft deliveries to Russia, the modifications which were done in order to suit the demands of the Russian climate and specifics of their front-line use, as well as the process of the new aircraft being mastered by the units of the Red Army Air Force. The first foreign aircraft a...

Pby Catalina Pilot's Flight Operating
One of the most widely-used multi-role Allied aircraft of WWII, Consolidated's PBY Catalina was a flying boat to be reckoned with. They were used as anti- submarine warfare platforms in the Atlantic, and gained notoriety in the Pacific as rescue and reconnaissance platforms, and as bombers. With their distinctive fuselages painted the shade of midnight, the "Black Cats" undertook daring raids of Japanese shipping and shore installations. Originally printed by the U.S. Navy during World War 2, this flight handbook taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Classified "Restricted", the manual was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been slightly reformatted. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Consolidated B-32 Dominator: The Ultimate Look, from Drawing Board to
Over the years the B-32 has been described only in a small number of magazine articles and in a booklet that have generally given a superficial and incomplete account, maligning the bomber, fairly or not, as a mediocre design besieged with developmental problems and a lackluster combat record. Consolidated B-32 Dominator - The Ultimate Look: from Drawing Board to Scrapyard is the definitive description and appraisal of this neglected bomber's development, testing, manufacture, and combat experience. The author used company design and production information, flight and test evaluations, along with previously unexplored Flight Manuals and Consolidated-Vultee Erection and Maintenance Manuals. From rare microfilm of original material and insights and personal narratives of the personnel involved, Wolf has gathered information on the pre-combat testing and all the combat missions of the bomber in the Pacific.

Consolidated PB2Y Coronado (Naval
The PB2Y Coronado was a large flying boat patrol bomber designed by Consolidated Aircraft. After deliveries of the PBY Catalina, also a Consolidated aircraft, began in 1935, the United States Navy began planning for the next generation of patrol bombers. Orders for two prototypes, the XPB2Y-1 and the Sikorsky XPBS-1, were placed in 1936; the prototype Coronado first flew in December 1937.After trials with the XPB2Y-1 prototype revealed some stability issues, the design was finalized as the PB2Y-2, with a large cantilever wing, twin tail, and four Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engines. The two inner engines were fitted with four-bladed reversible pitch propellers; the outer engines had standard three-bladed feathering props. Like the PBY Catalina before it, the PB2Y's wingtip floats retracted to reduce drag and increase range.

Consolidated PB4Y-1/1P Liberator (Naval
The Navy's acquisition of the B-24D as a long range patrol bomber/sub hunter (PB4Y-1) and as a long range photo recon platform (PB4Y-1P) marked a major shift in patrol doctrine and the eventual end to the flying boat patrol plane. The Navy Liberators became a one ship strike force as they roamed thousands of miles on sector searches and destroyed more than 1,000 ships and hundreds of aircraft. The original under-gunned early B-24Ds were up-gunned with bow turrets from Consolidated, ERCO, MPC, and Emerson and with Sperry ball turrets in their bellies when search radar was not fitted. The B-24Ds were replaced with B-24Js, B-24Ls, and B-24Ms all designated PB4Y-1/1Ps. The PB4Y-1P photo planes were used to map and survey Japanese strongholds before invasions and discover new airfields and fleet movements. No mission was too far or too dangerous. It was in a remote control PB4Y-1 flying bomb that Joe Kennedy was killed over England. After the war, photo squadrons continued to operate the photo version into the early 1050s. The book covers all engineering details and structures and covers all the PB4Y-1 squadron's history and most combat operations.

FLYING CATALINAS: The Consolidated PBY Catalina in
The consolidated PBY Catalina was probably the most versatile and successful flying boat/amphibian ever built, serving not just with the US Army, Navy and Coast Guard during the Second World War, but also with the air forces of Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with the Danes, Free French and Norwegians as well as in Brazil, Chile, Indonesia and elsewhere. With a remarkable lifting capacity and endurance, this long-range twin-engine aircraft could absorb a great deal of punishment and still return home after flights lasting an entire day and covering thousands of miles. It was employed as a maritime reconnaissance aircraft, as a bomber and torpedo-bomber, as an anti submarine weapon, as a mine layer, as a special operations machine and as a search-and-rescue craft by day and night. It ferried stores, mail and people - many of them sick and injured - across the world's oceans. In this book Andrew Hendrie tells the story of the "Flying Cats", of their achievements and exploits, of the heroism of many of the crews and the problems they had to endure.

Project Zebra: Roosevelt and Stalin's Top-Secret Mission to Train 300 Soviet Airmen in
TOP-SECRET PROJECT ZEBRA.ONE OF WORLD WAR 2's LAST GREAT, UNTOLD STORIES. (contains 150+ rare photographs and documents)Project Zebra was the brainchild of Franklin Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin. And, it would be the only time in history Soviet airmen were trained in America by Americans to fly American built aircraft. During the course of the 24-month mission, 185 huge, state-of-the-art amphibious warplanes, hand painted with Red Army stars, were built in a secured sector of the Philadelphia Naval Yard. Once completed, the planes were ferried to the sleepy, patriotic town of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. There a select group of US Naval officers trained 300+ Soviet airmen during an 18-month period, before dispatching a Soviet squadron at a time to the Atlantic and Pacific battle zones. But Project Zebra was far more than just a bold military mission; it was a historic human event. Despite language barriers, cultural differences and the subsequent Cold War, the Soviet and American Zebras built life-long friendships based on mutual respect and trust--something that might serve us well to remember during today's turbulent times.

Convair Advanced Designs II: Secret Fighters, Attack Aircraft, and Unique Concepts
Although the Convair Aircraft Company built some of the world's best seaplanes and bombers during World War II the company's rise to prominence as a builder of fighters and attack aircraft did not occur until after 1945. This companion publication to Robert E Bradley's Convair Advanced Designs: Secret Projects from San Diego, 1923-1962, covers these new aircraft types in the same detailed and comprehensive style. Previously unpublished company photographs, models, and drawings of such radical concepts as a vertical takeoff ground-attack fighter and giant eight-engine double-decker military transport combine with other futuristic designs some of which eventually evolved into production aircraft. With much new and comprehensive information and highly detailed technical specifications, Convair Advanced Designs II is a natural follow-up for owners of Bradley's first volume.
